The Cost of the Nice Boss: Why Being Liked Is Costing You Respect

21 July 2026

Everyone likes the nice boss. The one who never pushes back. Who lets things slide. Who softens every hard truth until it disappears.

But here's what nobody says out loud your team might like you. And still not respect you.

And in leadership, respect is the one you actually need.

In this episode of Lead Different, I break down the dangerous gap between being liked and being respected and give you the CLEAR framework, a step-by-step tool for having the accountability conversations you've been avoiding.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE
→ The real difference between being KIND and being NICE — and why it matters
→ The 3 patterns that reveal a Nice Boss before they even realise it
→ Why softening feedback until it loses meaning is a form of dishonesty
→ The CLEAR Framework how to have accountability conversations that are firm without being harsh
→ Why the best leaders are deeply kind but not always nice

THE CLEAR FRAMEWORK
C — Context: Ground the conversation in a specific event, not a character judgment
L — Listen: Before you say anything else, ask what happened. Then be quiet.
E — Effect: Share the real impact — on the team, the client, the business
A — Ask for commitment: Don't tell them what to do. Ask what they'll do differently.
R — Record & Revisit: Write down what was agreed. Follow up. Accountability needs follow-through.

YOUR CHALLENGE THIS WEEK
Think of one accountability conversation you've been avoiding. You know the one — it's been sitting in the back of your mind. This week, have it. Use the CLEAR framework. Keep it private, specific, and kind. Notice what happens to the relationship on the other side.
